![]() ![]() Many journalists were visibly shaken by the images, which until yesterday had been viewed only by the judge, jurors and lawyers.Īccording to reporters, the bodies were drenched in blood and some of the photos showed the victims staring with wide-open eyes. ![]() The 58 photos from the crime scene and the coroner's autopsies were displayed for reporters in the courtroom as Ito watched from the jury box during a half-day morning recess. ![]() Responding immediately, Simpson attorney Robert Shapiro told Ito that the defense will call Golden when it begins its case next month.Īlso yesterday, members of the media got their first grim look at the disturbing photographs of the victims' bodies and the gory knife wounds that Simpson is charged with inflicting one year ago outside Nicole Simpson's Brentwood townhouse. But Kelberg told Ito yesterday that Golden's testimony would simply be redundant because Lakshmanan has already thoroughly gone over the details of the autopsies with the jury. Tentative and unsure of some of his autopsy conclusions, Golden proved an embarrassing witness for the prosecution when he testified at Simpson's preliminary hearing last summer. ![]() In a surprise move yesterday, prosecutor Brian Kelberg told Ito that the government does not plan to call as a witness deputy coroner Irwin Golden, the controversial medical examiner who made dozens of mistakes when he conducted the original autopsies on the victims. Judge Lance Ito allowed the detailed and gruesome testimony over earlier defense objections that included a plea for a recess on the anniversary of deaths of Goldman and Nicole Simpson. Lakshmanan, as he had last week, demonstrated with a ruler again and again how a number of knife wounds were inflicted on Goldman. Knife wounds on the front of his hands, including his palms, however, indicated that Goldman tried to fend off his killer's slashes, the coroner explained. They came when Goldman fell backward into a tightly enclosed corner between two trees, the back of his hands "flailing" against the rough bark and metal bars behind him, the coroner said. Defense attorney Johnnie Cochran displayed photographs for the jury in February of a stripped-down Simpson that showed no bruises or other marks on the former football star's body shortly after the slayings.īut Lakshmanan said yesterday that the "abrasions and contusions" on the middle knuckles of Goldman's right and left hands were not consistent with blows against a human. ![]()
